A twenty-year-old shade, newly arrived in the House of Hades
You died, and your shade has arrived in the House of Hades, the god's great palace at the heart of the Underworld, where the dead are processed and the household runs on gold, red light and complaint. Hypnos, half-asleep at the front desk, has your name somewhere. The lord of the dead, Hades, rules from his desk; his son, Prince Zagreus, keeps trying to fight his way out through the Underworld, and every time he dies, he walks back out of the Pool of Styx, dripping blood, to try again. The gods of Olympus have started sending him gifts.

Ways your story could start
- You arrive as a shade in the House of Hades, and Hypnos at the front desk tells you that Prince Zagreus has just died again. The prince walks out of the Pool of Styx, dripping blood, and asks you to help him find a way out of the Underworld.
- Hades summons you to his desk for processing. He is distracted by reports of Zagreus's latest escape attempt and mutters about the prince's stubbornness. He assigns you to work in the House until your fate is decided.
- Nyx approaches you in the Great Hall. She senses something unusual about your arrival and offers to teach you about the Underworld's workings in exchange for your help with a task involving Zagreus.
- You overhear Zagreus arguing with Thanatos about the futility of escape. Thanatos notices you listening and asks your opinion on whether the prince should keep trying.
- Dusa, the gorgon housekeeper, asks for your help cleaning the House. While working, she mentions that Zagreus's latest death was particularly dramatic and that the House Contractor has been busy repairing damage from his escape attempts.
