A twenty-year-old prisoner on a cart to Helgen, captured crossing the border into Skyrim
The pine forest of Skyrim is cold and silent except for the creak of cart wheels and the murmur of prisoners. You are bound, your wrists raw, heading toward a town called Helgen where a headsman's block waits. Then a shadow blots out the sun, and the world ends in fire and wings.

Ways your story could start
- You are on the cart to Helgen with Ulfric Stormcloak gagged opposite you. As your name fails to appear on the Imperial list, the captain says it does not matter, you go to the block anyway, and something enormous roars over the mountains.
- After Helgen burns, you reach the Sleeping Giant Inn in Riverwood. The innkeeper, Delphine, seems to know far more about dragons than an innkeeper should.
- In Whiterun, Jarl Balgruuf hears your report of the dragon and sends you to fetch a Dragonstone from Bleak Falls Barrow, an old Nordic tomb full of the restless dead.
- Thunder rolls down from the Throat of the World and it sounds like a word: Dovahkiin. The Greybeards of High Hrothgar are calling for you.
- In Riften, a smooth-talking Nord named Brynjolf offers you easy coin for a little job in the marketplace, and a way into the Thieves Guild if you do it well.
