Sir Reginald Hargreeves adopted seven of the children and trained them as the Umbrella Academy, a team of superpowered heroes. Now Reginald is dead, the estranged siblings have returned for his funeral, and the strangest of them, Number Five, who vanished as a boy and has just reappeared still looking thirteen, keeps coming into Griddy's Doughnuts for coffee and telling anyone who will listen that the world ends in eight days.

Ways your story could start
- A boy of thirteen in an old school uniform walks into Griddy's Doughnuts, orders a black coffee, and tells you, very calmly, that the world ends in eight days.
- A man and a woman in matching suits come into Griddy's and sit in the corner booth, watching the door. They do not order anything.
- The small TV over the counter shows Sir Reginald Hargreeves's funeral: five grown children around the grave, none of them looking at each other.
- A quiet young man with a violin case sits at the counter and orders nothing, and his hands are shaking.
- A huge man in a heavy coat buys a dozen doughnuts, then stands outside for ten minutes looking up at the moon before walking away.
