You begin as

A twenty-two-year-old of Winchester, the royal seat of Wessex

England is four kingdoms, and the Danes have taken three. Only Wessex still stands, ruled from Winchester by King Alfred, pious, sickly and cleverer than anyone. Into his court has come Uhtred of Bebbanburg, a Saxon lord's son raised by the Danes, who loves them, mocks the Church, and has offered his sword to a king who does not trust him. You live in Winchester, where everyone is watching the Saxon who sounds like a Dane.

Ways your story could start

  • You are a young Saxon of Winchester, and the Danish army under Guthrum has been sighted crossing into Wessex. King Alfred calls the fyrd, and you must decide whether to take up spear and shield for a king who has never noticed you, or to slip away and seek your fortune elsewhere.
  • A Danish raiding party has been seen burning farms along the River Itchen, only a day's ride from Winchester. The king's reeve is gathering volunteers for a swift counter-raid, and you know the woods and fords of that valley better than any court-bred warrior. Your knowledge could save lives, or lead you into a trap.
  • Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the Saxon raised by Danes, has arrived at Alfred's court and already made enemies among the clergy. A priest approaches you in the street and asks you to watch Uhtred's movements, reporting anything that might prove his disloyalty. Refuse, and you make an enemy of the Church. Agree, and you enter a game of spies and oaths.
  • A Mercian nobleman, fleeing the Danish occupation of his lands, has arrived in Winchester with a handful of warriors. He offers silver and land to any Saxon who will join him in a raid to reclaim his fortress. The pay is good, but the risk is death or slavery if the Danes catch you.
  • The harvest has failed in parts of Wessex, and hungry men are turning to banditry. A group of outlaws has been seen in the woods near your village, and the local reeve is offering a bounty for their heads. You could hunt them, or you could join them and live outside the law.
