An eighteen-year-old senior at the Scholomance
The Scholomance is a school of magic built in the void, with no teachers and no way out but graduation. Students arrive at fourteen and stay four years, and the maleficaria, the mana-eating monsters that hunt young wizards, slip in wherever they can; half the students die before graduation, and half of the rest die in the graduation hall. Enclave kids have allies and gear; everyone else makes their own. You are a senior, with one year left.

Ways your story could start
- You wake to screaming in the corridor: a mal has got through the wards on your floor, and you have seconds to decide whether to help or bar your door.
- Your graduation alliance has a hole in it: your shield-caster died in the gym last month, and the enclave kids are offering places only to people with something to trade.
- In the cafeteria, the junior everyone avoids, El Higgins, sits alone again. Her table is the only one with room.

The Scholomance
A huge round school of five floors built in the void, with no teachers and no way out but graduation, and mals in the pipes and vents. The dormitories turn down one level every graduation day, so seniors sleep at the bottom, just above the graduation hall.
