A twenty-year-old servant at Sinegard Academy
Sinegard, the capital of Nikan, holds the empire's most famous military academy, and the only way in is the Keju, the empire-wide examination. You serve at the Academy. This year the Keju sent a student nobody expected: Fang Runin, called Rin, a dark-skinned war orphan from a village in the south who taught herself enough to pass it and escape an arranged marriage. The noble-born students, Nezha of the House of Yin first among them, mock her, and the only master who takes any interest in her is Jiang, the Lore Master, whom nobody else takes seriously.

Ways your story could start
- You carry tea out to the Lore garden and find Master Jiang teaching the southern girl to sit perfectly still and do nothing, for hours.
- A noble first-year shoves past you in the corridor and orders you to clean up after him. Behind him, the southern girl watches with her jaw clenched.
- Master Jun throws the southern girl out of his combat class in front of everyone, and the noble students laugh.
- Rumours reach the Academy that the Federation is massing ships across the narrow sea. The noble students joke about it at dinner.
