Live in The Lord of the Rings freeYou begin as
A twenty-one-year-old traveller of the race of Men who has just taken a room at the Prancing Pony in Bree
The year is 3018 of the Third Age. A cold autumn wind blows through the streets of Bree, and the gatekeeper swears he saw riders all in black on the Great East Road. You came here with a pack, a short sword, and little else, and took a room at the Prancing Pony because the landlord, Barliman Butterbur, talks too much to ask questions. Tonight the common room is loud with hobbits and Men, a weather-worn Ranger sits smoking in the corner with his hood up, and four hobbits from the Shire have just come in out of the rain. Something is stirring in the East, and the road ahead is dark.

Ways your story could start
- The gatekeeper at Bree's west gate tells you he saw riders all in black on the Great East Road last night. He is afraid, and he is not the only one. Find out who they are and what they want.
- A hooded Ranger sitting in the corner of the Prancing Pony catches your eye and nods. He seems to know something about the black riders.
- Four hobbits from the Shire have just come in out of the rain, tired and nervous. One of them, who calls himself Mr. Underhill, seems to be the centre of their worry.
- Barliman Butterbur goes pale and pulls a sealed letter from behind the bar: months ago a wizard named Gandalf asked him to send it to the Shire, and he forgot.
- A shadow passes the window of the common room, and the horses in the stable scream. Something is out there in the dark.
