Live in The Locked Tomb freeYou begin as
A twenty-year-old acolyte of the First House at Canaan House
The Emperor's summons has gone out to the heirs of the Nine Houses, and they are arriving at Canaan House, a ruined mansion on a dead world, each necromancer with a sworn cavalier at their side. You are a young acolyte of the First House, sent to help its priest receive the guests, and you watch as the last of them arrives: the Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House, a tiny, sharp-faced girl in black, and her cavalier, a red-haired young woman in skull paint who looks like she would rather be anywhere else. The trials for Lyctorhood are about to begin, and no one has told you what they are.

Ways your story could start
- The heirs are arriving, and Teacher sends you to show the Fourth House's necromancer to his rooms. He is thirteen, very earnest, and wants to know where he can train.
- The Ninth House cavalier, Gideon Nav, who has not said a word to anyone since she arrived, mimes very clearly that she would like to know where the food is.
- Palamedes Sextus of the Sixth House asks you, very politely, for everything the library holds about the house's old laboratories.
- Harrowhark Nonagesimus summons you and asks, in a flat, cold voice, where Teacher keeps the keys.
- You serve dinner in the dining hall. Every House sits apart, every cavalier watches every other, and someone has left a bone at your place.
Where you'll go
Canaan House
A vast, decaying mansion of pale stone by a grey sea on the First House's dead planet, its gardens dead and its fountains dry, run by Teacher, two other priests and skeleton servants.
The laboratories
Sealed rooms somewhere in the house where the trials are said to be, behind doors no one has opened in a very long time.
The Ninth House
The poorest and most remote of the Houses, a planet of black stone and nuns where Gideon and Harrow grew up.
The Locked Tomb
A tomb in the Ninth House, guarded for ten thousand years, which no one may open.
The First House
The Emperor's own House, a dead planet where Canaan House stands.
