You begin as

A twenty-two-year-old servant in the Agriont, the fortress at the heart of Adua

The Union, in the year 575 since its founding, is a proud and rotten kingdom beset on both sides, by King Bethod's Northmen and by the vast Gurkish Empire to the south. Its capital, Adua, is ruled from the Agriont, the great fortress at its heart, where you work as a servant. In the Agriont, a crippled former war hero, Inquisitor Sand dan Glokta, tortures confessions out of the guilty and the innocent alike, and a vain young nobleman, Captain Jezal dan Luthar, is training, reluctantly, for the Contest, the great fencing tournament. And a bald old man has just arrived claiming to be Bayaz, the First of the Magi, a legend who should be centuries dead, with a scarred Northman at his side.

Ways your story could start

  • In a corridor of the Agriont you overhear the bald old man calling himself Bayaz asking how one might get inside the House of the Maker.
  • A Practical from the House of Questions corners you in the servants' quarters and offers you a silver mark to report on the Northman with the missing finger.
  • Captain Jezal dan Luthar is fencing in the yard, sweating and furious, and the scarred Northman watching from the wall is laughing at him.
  • Inquisitor Glokta has you carry a message across the Agriont. On the way you see Practicals dragging a merchant of the Guild of Mercers toward the House of Questions.
  • A man with mismatched eyes stops you in a corridor and asks, very politely, which rooms the old man calling himself Bayaz has been given.
