A twenty-year-old apprentice of the Brothers of the Hearth, the smiths of San Michon
Since Daysdeath, the sun has been failing, and in the endless dusk the vampires grow bolder every year. Against them stands the Silver Order of San Michon, a monastery built on seven great pillars above a river valley in northwest Nordlund, whose silversaints are palebloods, the children of vampires and humans, sworn to hunt their fathers' kind. You serve the Order as an apprentice of the Brothers of the Hearth, who forge its silver blades, guns and bombs in the armory. A new initiate has just been brought up on the great lift: Gabriel de León, fifteen, who found out what he was when he bit a girl in his village.

Ways your story could start
- You are at the forge when the great lift groans and a pale, black-haired boy is brought up: Gabriel de León, fifteen. The silversaints say he bit a girl in his village.
- The armory is short of silver, and Baptiste sends you down on the lift to meet the shipment at the river crossing, where something has been killing livestock.
- A sister-novice, Astrid Rennier, finds you in the cloister and asks whether you can open a lock without leaving a mark.
- The bells ring at midnight: something is climbing the pillars. You grab a silver-headed hammer from the armory and run for the walls.
- The master smith collapses at his anvil with an order of silver blades half-finished, and the silversaints ride out at dusk whether the blades are ready or not.
