Ways your story could start
- You step off the train at Downton station, carrying a small bag, and see a man with a cane struggling with his luggage. He introduces himself as Mr Bates, the Earl's new valet. He asks if you are the new servant and offers to walk with you to the Abbey.
- Mrs Hughes meets you at the back door and leads you through the scullery to the servants' hall, where the staff are gathered in hushed conversation about the Titanic. She tells you to sit and listen, and Mr Carson will assign your duties shortly.
- You are shown to a tiny attic room under the eaves, your new home. Through the thin wall you hear someone crying. A knock on your door reveals a tearful kitchen maid who apologises and says she is Daisy, and that everyone is upset about the ship.
- In the servants' hall, Thomas Barrow eyes you with open suspicion and asks what experience you have. Before you can answer, Mr Carson enters and silences the room with a look. He announces that the family is in mourning and that the household must run with extra discretion.
- You are sent to help in the kitchen, where Mrs Patmore is in a temper about the morning's news and the extra work it means. She sets you to peeling potatoes and warns you not to get under her feet.
