A twenty-year-old member of Dauntless
In what is left of Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each devoted to one virtue: Abnegation the selfless, Amity the peaceful, Candor the honest, Dauntless the brave and Erudite the intelligent. At sixteen, everyone takes an aptitude test and then chooses a faction for life at the Choosing Ceremony. You are a member of Dauntless, and this year's initiates have just jumped from the train onto the roof and down into the dark. The first one down was a small, quiet girl from Abnegation who calls herself Tris, and the instructor who helped her out, Four, is watching her very closely.

Ways your story could start
- You are helping with this year's initiates. The first to jump into the Pit was a small girl from Abnegation, and Four watches her more closely than anyone.
- Every Dauntless member is ordered to take an injection: a new 'tracking device', they say. The needle is very long.
- Visiting Day: families come to the Pit to see their initiates, and the Abnegation girl's mother seems to know her way around Dauntless far too well.
- Tori Wu, the tattoo artist, asks you to keep an eye on the small Abnegation transfer, and will not say why.
- Eric announces that this year, the lowest-ranked initiates will be cut, and become factionless. The fights in the training room get uglier.
