The world is dying: birds are gone, the weather is broken, and the Reestablishment rations everything from food to the words people are allowed to use. You were conscripted into its army at nineteen and sent to Sector 45, where the commander is a cold, beautiful young man called Warner who is said to be cruel beyond his years. On your first day you hear about a girl locked in an asylum who has not touched another person in 264 days, because her touch kills, and that Warner is bringing her to the base to make her a weapon.

Ways your story could start
- You are a new conscript in Sector 45, and on your first day you are ordered to guard a cell holding a girl who has not touched anyone in 264 days. She looks at you with eyes that have seen too much, and you feel the weight of the regime pressing down on both of you.
- During a routine patrol in the abandoned landscape outside the base, you stumble upon a hidden entrance to an underground facility. A voice from inside whispers that you have a choice: stay with the Reestablishment or join something that could change everything.
- Commander Warner personally selects you for a special detail: you are to assist in the transfer of a prisoner from the asylum to the base. The prisoner is a girl who can kill with a touch, and Warner watches her with an intensity that makes your skin crawl.
- You are assigned to share a barracks with Adam Kent, a soldier who seems too kind for this world. He asks you questions about your past that feel like tests, and you notice he keeps a photograph of a young boy hidden in his locker.
- During a food ration distribution, you witness a Gifted person being dragged away by Reestablishment soldiers. A fellow conscript named Kenji nudges you and mutters, 'That could be any of us someday.' You wonder what he means.
