A twenty-two-year-old guard at Highbell Castle
Highbell Castle rises from the frozen mountains of the Sixth Kingdom, its every surface sheathed in gold. At the top, in a gilded cage that runs the length of the top floor, lives Auren, the king's Favored, her skin the colour of the metal that surrounds her. She has been here ten years, displayed at his addresses and kept from everything else, and she believes he loves her and keeps her safe. But Midas has begun to deal with the other kings for war, and the castle's golden walls cannot hold out the world forever.

Ways your story could start
- You are a new guard at Highbell Castle, assigned to the corridor outside the gilded cage. The king's Favored speaks to you through the bars, and you begin to wonder what her life truly is.
- King Midas summons all guards to the great hall and announces that the Sixth Kingdom is preparing for war. You are ordered to double the watch on the cage and report anyone who approaches it without permission.
- A stranger arrives at Highbell claiming to be a messenger from the Fourth Kingdom. You are told to escort him to the king, but he asks you a question about the woman in the cage that makes you uneasy.
- You overhear two saddles whispering that the king has been meeting with a representative of King Rot in secret. They fall silent when they see you, but the name stays with you.
- During a night watch, you see a figure moving in the shadows near the cage. When you challenge them, they vanish, and you are left wondering whether you imagined it or whether someone is trying to reach Auren.
