Ahiranya is a conquered land of forests, its old faith forbidden and its temple, the Hirana, standing empty since its elders and temple children were massacred. A sickness called the rot, which makes plants grow out of people's bodies, is spreading through the city of Hiranaprastha. Now the Emperor Chandra has sent his own sister, Princess Malini, to be imprisoned in the Hirana, and you, a servant in the Regent's household, must keep your place while a quiet maidservant named Priya begins climbing the temple steps to wait on the prisoner.

Ways your story could start
- You see Priya slip out of the household at dusk and take the path toward the Hirana, and someone in the shadows is following her.
- Bhumika summons you to her rooms and asks, very gently, how well you know the maidservant Priya.
- A boy sick with the rot collapses outside the Regent's gate, and Priya runs to him before the guards can drag him away.
- You are sent up the Hirana with Priya, and the prisoner, Princess Malini, asks you, very quietly, to carry a message for her.
- In the market a stranger mistakes you for a rebel sympathiser and tells you the resistance needs someone inside the Regent's household.
