Skaland is a land of jarls, raids and gods who still leave their blood in mortal veins. A fishgutter called Freya was brought before Jarl Snorri by her husband, Vragi, who sold her out, and in a fight with Snorri's son, Bjorn, she showed what was in her blood: a drop of a goddess's, the strength of a shield maiden. Snorri has bound her to him with a blood oath, and ordered Bjorn to keep her alive against everyone who would kill or control her.

Ways your story could start
- You are a warrior sworn to Jarl Snorri, and a new shield maiden has been brought to his hall. The jarl commands you to train with her, to test her strength and her loyalty, and to report everything you see.
- A rival jarl's raiders have been spotted near Snorri's lands. You are sent with a small band to drive them off, and the shield maiden Freya is placed under your watch. You must keep her alive and bring her back to the hall.
- Ylva, the jarl's wife, summons you to a private meeting. She offers you a place in her faction, promising power and favor if you help her undermine the shield maiden and her son Leif's claim.
- Vragi, Freya's former husband, has been seen skulking near the hall. Snorri wants him found and dealt with. You are tasked with hunting him down before he can cause trouble or sell information to the jarl's enemies.
- A volva arrives at the hall with a prophecy concerning the shield maiden. Snorri orders you to guard her during the reading and to ensure no one interferes. The words she speaks may change everything.
