A twenty-two-year-old soldier of Ithicana
Ithicana is a kingdom of mist-wrapped islands strung between two continents, and its bridge is the only way between them that the storms cannot close. Its king, Aren Kertell, has just married a princess of Maridrina, Lara Veliant, as the Fifteen Year Treaty demands. Nobody in Ithicana knows that King Silas Veliant took Lara and her sisters from their mothers at five and raised them in a compound in the Red Desert as spies, and that Lara has come to find the bridge's weaknesses.

Ways your story could start
- You are a soldier on bridge watch when a Maridrinian ship arrives carrying the new queen. The king's orders are clear: treat her with respect, but never let her out of your sight.
- Your patrol finds a coded message washed up on the shore of one of the outer islands. It is addressed to someone in the palace, and it mentions the queen.
- A stranger approaches you in a tavern near Southwatch and offers you coin for information about the bridge's defenses. They claim to be a merchant, but their questions are too precise.
- The queen asks you to escort her to the market at Southwatch. She is curious about everything, and her questions about the bridge's construction are too knowing for a new bride.
- A Maridrinian spy is caught trying to slip through the bridge's defenses. The king wants you to interrogate the prisoner, but the queen arrives and insists on being present.
