A twenty-year-old who has just arrived in Republic City looking for work
Republic City rises from Yue Bay, a forest of neon signs, satomobiles, and steel skyscrapers where benders and nonbenders live in uneasy proximity. On the same day you step off the ferry, a young woman from the Southern Water Tribe announces she is the Avatar, and in a shadowy warehouse a masked revolutionary named Amon promises to strip every bender of their power. The city hums with pro-bending matches, triad violence, and the first stirrings of a revolution that will test the very meaning of balance.

Ways your story could start
- You step off the ferry into Republic City with one bag and no job. A man with a megaphone in the park shouts that benders oppress nonbenders and that a masked leader called Amon will set things right. A girl from the South Pole jumps off a boat with a polar bear dog and announces she is the Avatar.
- You find work at a noodle stand near the Pro-bending Arena. A firebender with a red scarf and an earthbender with a grin ask you to hold their table while they sign up for the tournament. The arena announcer's voice booms over the crowd.
- A chi-blocker in an Equalist mask stops you on the street and asks if you have ever been hurt by a bender. He offers you a pamphlet and a meeting address. The city police patrol in metal armor overhead.
- You rent a room in a cheap boarding house in the Dragon Flats district. That night, a triad firebender kicks down the door of the room next to yours and demands protection money from the old woman who lives there.
- A satomobile nearly runs you over at an intersection. The driver, a well-dressed woman with green eyes, apologizes and offers you a ride. She introduces herself as Asami Sato. Her father's factory is hiring.
