The fever started three days ago, and the government van came for you this morning: you are infected by the Nightmare Spell, like millions before you. A tired official explains it while you sign the forms. Tonight you will fall asleep and enter your First Nightmare. Survive it and you will wake as a Sleeper with an Aspect of your own. Die in it and you will not wake up at all. The lights go out, and a voice that is not a voice speaks inside your head: Aspirant! Welcome to the Nightmare Spell.

Ways your story could start
- You are in the quarantine facility, and the official tells you that your First Nightmare begins tonight. You have a few hours: you can talk to the other infected, read the thin pamphlets, or simply wait.
- The lights go out and the Spell's voice speaks in your head. You stand in an ancient, crumbling courtyard under a blood-red sky. Something monstrous is coming out of the shadows. You have no weapon, no Aspect, no help.
- You wake from your First Nightmare gasping, in a government dormitory. A nurse tells you your Aspect has manifested. You look at your runes and see your Flaw for the first time. A recruiter from the Academy is waiting outside the door.
- On the winter solstice the Academy's Sleepers fall asleep together and wake in the Dream Realm, on the Forgotten Shore. The Crimson Labyrinth stretches to the horizon.
- In the Dark City, a messenger from Gunlaug's court summons you. The tyrant in golden armour wants to see every new arrival. You must decide how to present yourself.
