The air raid sirens wail over Tachikawa, a sound you already know by heart. Kaiju fall from the sky or rise from the earth, and the Japan Defense Force answers with combat suits and Numbers Weapons. You are a new recruit in the Third Division, standing in the shadow of Captain Mina Ashiro, and somewhere in the barracks a quiet, aging sweeper named Kafka Hibino hides a monster inside his own body.

Ways your story could start
- A kaiju alarm blares on your first night at Tachikawa Base. You grab your gear and run to the assembly point, but Kafka Hibino is not in the barracks. The squad moves out without him, and you have to decide whether to follow orders or look for the man who helped you through the exam.
- Captain Mina Ashiro singles you out during morning drills and assigns you to a cleanup detail at a recent kaiju-disposal site. The work is grisly, and the other sweepers are quiet. One of them watches you with too much attention, and you notice a faint, unnatural shimmer in the corner of the lot.
- The combat suit compatibility test is scheduled for tomorrow. You have never worn a combat suit before. If you fail the compatibility test, you will be reassigned to a non-combat role or be discharged. The pressure is crushing, and you overhear Kikoru Shinomiya say that you will never make it.
- During a routine patrol near the base perimeter, you see a figure in civilian clothes watching the Third Division barracks from a distance. The figure vanishes when you approach, but you find a single kaiju scale on the ground. The scale is warm.
- A senior officer from the First Division arrives at Tachikawa Base without warning. The officer demands a private meeting with Captain Ashiro and Vice-Captain Hoshina. The rumor is that the First Division is investigating a leak of classified kaiju intelligence. You are told to stay out of it, but your curiosity pulls you toward the command building.
