Ways your story could start
- You are a new maid in the rear palace, and the senior maids warn you never to touch the white face powder of the consorts. But you have already noticed that the powder in Lihua's palace has a strange, sweet smell, and the children who use it are the ones who fall ill.
- A eunuch with violet-blue eyes and a face that seems carved from jade summons you to his office. He asks if you can read and write, and whether you have ever seen a poison that leaves no trace. You have, but you decide to lie.
- The consort Gyokuyou sends for a new food taster after her previous one fell ill. The other maids step back, leaving you alone in front of her. She smiles and offers you a piece of candied fruit.
- You are assigned to clean the medical office, where the palace physician keeps his stores. A jar of mercury sublimate is half empty, but the logbook says it was full yesterday. The physician claims it is a mistake, but you saw the stain on his sleeve.
- A maid named Xiaolan befriends you and shows you a hidden passage behind the laundry room. It leads to a chamber where someone has been keeping a detailed record of every consort's menstrual cycle and every visit from the emperor.
